When I had frozen shoulder several years ago, I discovered by pure accident that doing an e-cise called Frog worked for me better than a pain-killer.
Anybody who experienced the painful frozen shoulder condition knows how badly it affects one’s sleep.
How exhausting it is not to be able to find a comfortable position where shoulder does not start hurting just after a few minutes.
Since I am not a big fan of drugs, I was trying to find some alternative. Before going to bed I would try lying in a Static Back position or do some other of the Egoscue method e-cises. I felt a little better afterwards but still could not sleep well.
I don’t remember anymore what inspired me to try a Frog e-cise – I think I came across a Frog e-cise modification that suggested using a couple of rolled towels for support – one under the neck and another under a low back .
I tried it with towels and it felt great. I stayed in it for 15 minutes instead of the recommended 1 or 2. When I got up from the floor I had almost no pain in my shoulder. Granted, it did not last forever – the pain came back after an hour or two. But it enabled me to fall asleep and sleep longer before I woke up. I started using Frog a few times a day instead of pain killers.
Well, some of you might think it was stupid on my part to suffer and not take at least Tylenol.
You see, my painful condition lasted for a total of 8 months and I could not envision myself bombarding my liver with a harmful medication for such a long time.
I also believe in healing rather than masking symptoms.
As a result, I used the following approach: after 5 months of going to all sorts of doctors I started taking a special “Frozen shoulder” Chinese herbal formula that I ordered online. It helped me to eliminate pain completely in three months and, at the same time, I was religiously doing my Egoscue exercises to restore the lost shoulder function.
While I am not claiming here that doing just a Frog will heal the frozen shoulder condition, I made a mental note that a this e-cise was very helpful for me.
After all, there many cases besides the frozen shoulder, when you might experience pain in this area.
Give it a try, Frog is very popular e-cise among my clients and very easy to do:
- Lie on your back and put soles of your feet together, letting the knees to fall out naturally.
- Make sure the feet are centered in the middle of the body.
- Your arms are out on the floor about at 45 degree angle from the body, palms up.
- Do not try forcing your knees down.
- Your low back will arch slightly off the floor, do NOT press it down.
- Relax and feel a stretch in the inner thighs and groin.
- You should not feel any back pain.
- If you prefer, use two rolled towels for lumbar and neck support.
- Stay in this position for 1 to 2 minutes – or longer if it feels good.
It is a pelvis exercise. It works on the groin and lengthens inner thigh muscles, using their pull to move the pelvis into a more symmetrical position.
Remember, our body works as a unit – if a pelvis is moved into a better position, your shoulders move into a better position as well. That’s why it often works for shoulder pain.
If for any reason this e-cise does not feel good or generates pain, use your own judgment. You can either stop it altogether or start with shorter time and gradually increase it.
Your body is an ultimate judge of what works for you and what does not.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this e-cise, whether you liked it or not, and what you experienced doing it.
