Posture Alignment Therapy – What to Expect

There are several reasons for a person to try posture alignment therapy. Usually it happens when people get really frustrated with all the other methods they tried for their chronic pain without success. Or when their favorite activity – walking, running, or playing sports starts hurting.

How long it takes to see results of posture alignment therapy?

The most common question I hear is how long it will take to get better. There is a short and a long answer to that.

The short answer is that you should start feeling better even right after the first session. Granted, it may be not a lasting relief – only a few minutes or so. But this is an indication that the exercises you got were a good fit for you.

The long answer is that it really depends on two factors:

  • How severe is the postural misalignment you have, and
  • How committed you are to your daily routine.

Everybody is different. The positive results are very real but they are cumulative. Taking a pain killer works faster but in a long run you’ll be better off by fixing the underlying issue – the postural misalignment.

I often hear from my clients that after doing their menu for only a month they see and feel a big difference.

There are also clients who say that they feel better right after doing their menus but the pain returns soon after that. They may get frustrated with posture alignment therapy. They may even start looking for yet another way to relieve pain.

In this case, I totally support it. I only want to make it clear to them that they should not stop doing their postural exercises. Because I know that posture alignment therapy is the only way to restore lost functions in a long run.

My personal experience is that sometimes you do need a combination of different methods to get better faster. When I had a frozen shoulder several years ago I used acupuncture and a special combination of Chinese herbs for an acute pain relief. I also did my Egoscue exercises to restore the lost function and to get rid of the lingering minor pain.

Listen to your body. It is your ultimate healer within. This is what posture alignment therapy is all about. The longer you do your exercises the more aware you become about your body. And the more you get a sense what works for you or does not.

I still cannot help marveling at the fact that I am actually quite aware of my posture during the day. And how much better it feels to be upright. When I pay attention I can even sense if there is a rotation in my hips or shoulders or uneven weight distribution in my feet.

In many respects, this is an unexpected bonus of the postural therapy – the body’s kinesthetic awareness.

As for the expected results, they are the following:

  • You will feel better.
  • You will look younger.
  • You will function better.
  • You may become taller.
  • You may never get the perfect posture but you will get an alignment that will allow you to live independently and enjoy the dignity of healthy aging.
